By UBS analysts German chipmaker Infineon Technologies AG (IFX) is likely to supply the new systems solution to Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) and 3G-enabled iPhones will be released by mid-year.

AT&T just confirmed that such a development is a work in progress. There are no official statements from Apple but it's obvious that any device released in U.S. will eventually be marketed in Europe.

What I mean is very simple – connectivity is crucial for any smartphone and despite the availability of WiFi, which is great, 3G is currently way more convenient, stable and in many cases faster, esp. considering HSDPA.

I dont get what you mean. How is the competitive disadvantage in the EU going to be resolved by AT&T in the US?

Without doubt speed is very desirable but you would be daft to think it is THE determinant of iPhone sales. The device is a pleasure to use for a variety of reasons which have nothing to do with speed. Its an iPod, its a YouTube viewer, its an organiser, its an emailer, its a camera etc etc. For god sake man, people want hacked versions of this phone which dont even have full functionality let alone 3G.
But not that Apple have neglected speed in its marketing. In UK, O2 have got a deal with The Cloud Wifi service allowing unlimited access to iPhone users to Cloud Wifi points.

We all want iPhones regardless of speed. At the moment anyway...
