I think a lot of people don&#039;t understand that Adobe isn&#039;t capable of open sourcing the Flash Player.  There are a number of technologies that Adobe licences but doesn&#039;t own inside the player itself.  (ex, mp3 or H.264 playback)

Adobe did, however, open source a significant part of the Flash Player as part of the Tamarin Project (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/tamarin/) with hopes that Mozilla would incorporate some of it&#039;s functionality into it&#039;s browser.  

Unfortunately, I don&#039;t think this ended up going anywhere.</description>
